This course is suitable for complete beginners to teaching. No previous teaching qualifications or experience are required. However, to be able to go on to teach beauty you will need to also be suitably qualified in the beauty subjects you wish to teach.

Open to anyone aged 18 years or over. Note this course does not constitute compulsory full time education for those under 18.

This is an intensive course with lots to learn! Student will need to commit around 4-8 hours independent study per week at home to complete this qualification.

Students must have a good command of spoken and written English (grade C or above GCSE English or equivalent).

Students will need access basic IT skills, plus a desktop pc with camera, microphone, speakers and stable high speed internet connection to complete the coursework and practical assessment (via Zoom). You may also wish to have a camera or smart phone for ease of recording your micro-teach session completed at home.

Comprehensive learning resources are provided via our online student portal to support your studies, which can be accessed conveniently on desktop, tablet or mobile.

You will need a minimum of 2 ‘learners’ to sit in on your micro-teach session to be completed at home (these can be friends or family). No ‘learners’ are required for the live micro-teach assessment session via Zoom as you will work with other students on this same programme.

Units covered within this qualification are:

• UET1 Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
• UET2 Understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training
• UET5 Understanding assessment in education and training

You will need to complete all the following within your 12-month enrolment period to achieve this qualification. This should be completed within the following guideline timescales:

• Month 1-3: Complete written coursework from home, learning guided by a comprehensive e-textbook provided flexibly online via our portal, with up to 3 months to complete this.
• Month 1-6: Complete practical coursework (written planning for 2 micro-teach sessions, delivering a micro-teach session at home with friends/family and submitting a recording of your micro-teach session), with up to 6 months to complete this.
• Month 7-12: Complete your practical assessment by delivering a 20 minute micro-teach session via a live Zoom session with the Assessor and up to 3 other students on this programme. Usually booked 2-6 weeks ahead.
• Certification: Sent via the post once received from VTCT.

There are many training providers offering similar sounding qualifications to the Level 3 Award in Education & Training but it is worth noting the awarding body. It is important to check the awarding body is an Ofqual registered and regulated qualification. It is also worth checking who the awarding body are. VTCT are world-renowned and the preferred awarding body for employers to take on training professionals as they are assured of the quality of the qualification. While the awarding body for similar, cheaper qualifications may be Ofqual registered, there are many new awarding bodies that may not carry as much weight when looking to enter the industry to teach. This qualification is internationally recognised and OFQUAL regulated. It is highly sought by employers. Get employment as a beauty tutor for a private training company or further education college teaching future beauty therapists on completion. Another option would be to work for a beauty supplier or product brand as a representative delivering brand training to salons / spas.

Alternatively, devise your own beauty courses and have these accredited by your chosen accrediting partner. This allows you to start your own beauty academy, running your own courses and ensuring your own students can obtain insurance on completion of your courses. The career opportunities are vast!

Upon completion of this course, you will hold an internationally recognised qualification to deliver training, often known as a ‘PTTLS’ qualification. PTLLS stands for Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector and is the first step for those wishing to become a qualified educator. Obtaining a PTLLS qualification is required of all educators, to be able to teach in further education colleges / adult education. This will allow you to gain insurance to deliver training courses, whether this is on behalf of a private training provider or delivering your own courses.

If looking to gain employment, you will be able to apply for positions to teach any subjects within which you also hold suitable professional qualifications i.e., recognised beauty certificates/qualifications. Private training companies are regularly advertising for employed or self-employed training professionals to deliver their own approved courses. We would always recommend gaining some experience training for an established academy before venturing out to start your own training business, to ensure you are aware of the industry and needs of learners. This will allow you to best tailor your courses for success.

You may wish to start your own training academy. Once you have obtained your VTCT Level 3 in Education & Training and provided you hold recognised qualifications within the subjects you wish to teach, you can look to devise your own training programmes. You will need to ensure you have teaching insurance in place also. When devising your course materials, you will usually need a structured lesson plan with learning objectives and assessment measures, course manuals for your students and template for your certification. You will also need policies in place to cover your learners such as equal opportunities policy. You can usually find templates to begin these through a simple internet search.

Once you have your courses designed and resources ready, you will need to ensure your learners can gain insurance on completion of your training. This is usually arranged by accrediting your courses through an accrediting body or insurance partner. Examples within beauty include BABTAC, ABT, IPHM, the CPD register or insurers such as InSync or Radius. You would need to contact the accrediting / insurance organisation directly to confirm their process for verifying your courses, there are often fees involved for this process. Once accredited, you just need to start advertising your courses and get training!
