A day in the life: Self-employed Massage Therapist

Introducing Saskia of Holistic Healing…

“On completion of my VTCT Level 3 in Massage with The Beauty Academy, I began working in spas and salons. 5 years later, using my experience of the beauty industry, I have decided to start my own business as a Holistic Therapist. Over the years, I have attended additional training days with The Beauty Academy including facial skincare, electrical facials and teacher training.”

What are the benefits of being a self-employed Massage Therapist?

“You can decide when you work and organise your own schedule. Being self-employed gives you the freedom to direct your business in any direction you desire. I currently offer a variety of treatments, including Indian head massage, hot stone treatments and luxury facials. You can build up a client base of friendly and loyal clients, and support yourself financially. I love that The Beauty Academy offer a variety of courses, so I can always keep my business up-to-date with the most popular and talked about treatments!”

What does a typical day look like?

No two days are the same which keeps my job so interesting. I’ll set up for each client beforehand in my treatment room. When the client arrives I’ll complete a consultation form to allow me to adapt the treatment to best meet their needs. Treatments typically last around an hour and then I’ll discuss aftercare and book them in for the next appointment. Its great to chat to regular clients as for many its more than just a treatment, it is a wellbeing experience – time to take a break for a little while. I choose my own working hours which gives great work/life balance. There is also admin to do – stock ordering, marketing, contacting clients and managing my diary so you do have to be motivated to succeed.

What’s next for you, Saskia?

I am looking to offer manual lymphatic drainage massage and oncology massage in the future. I’m currently completing an online course with The Beauty Academy in lymphatic drainage so will incorporate this into my massage treatments once qualified. I would love to move into teaching in future and with the VTCT Level 3 Teaching award that I’ll have completed soon, this will be a realistic goal for me very soon! It’s such an exciting and rewarding career to have as a massage therapist and I would recommend it to anyone!”

Follow in Saskia’s footsteps with accredited & insurable training with The Beauty Academy…

Brilliant course. Tutor Leanne was so helpful and friendly and made me feel totally at ease. I was nervous as I have never done any beauty training before and she put me at ease straight away. Brilliant service and I will one hundred percent be using again. Thank you very much!!
